Have you ever removed your sheets from the wash and found that they are all wrinkled up? While the most common place for those wrinkles to occur is in the dryer, the washing machine can also twist and wring your sheets so that they come out with a spider-web pattern of wrinkles. Many people will choose to just live with wrinkles in their sheets, but there are ways to minimise the number and severity of wrinkles in your sheets, if you are willing to put in a little extra effort.

Solution 1: Delicate Wash

The best way to reduce creasing in your cotton sheets is to wash them on the delicate cycle. The delicate cycle will not only preserve the fibres of your sheets for longer than more vigorous washings, but it will also twist and turn your sheets far less. When you remove your sheets from the washing machine, you can air-dry them, either outside or in your laundry area. Gently dried by the sun and by the air, your sheets will not develop the same amount of creases that running them through the dryer will inevitably create. As an added bonus, your sheets will probably last longer! If you have a serious stain that you need to remove, use a pre-treatment and run a soak cycle, rather than revving up the spin cycle.

Solution 2: Ironing

If you have already washed and dried your sheets and they are still covered in wrinkles, one of the best things you can do to get rid of those wrinkles is to iron your sheets. While this may seem like an unnecessary and arduous task, it is often the only way to achieve that streamlined, smooth, modern look that you want for your bedroom. Cotton sheets will usually require the highest setting on your iron and you can help ease the wrinkles out by spraying them with some water before running the iron over them.

If you do not have time to iron but still want to get rid of some wrinkles, you can always hang your sheets in the bathroom while you take a hot shower. The steam will relax the creases. For even better results, find a wrinkle releasing product and spray it onto your sheets before you shower.

Why would I want to reduce creasing in my sheets?

Some people are not bothered by wrinkles and creases on their sheets. However, if you are trying to pull the décor of your room together and achieve a modern, streamlined appearance, wrinkled sheets can undoubtedly ruin your entire design. Even the turned down portion of your sheets, with just a few wrinkles, will look messy and unattractive, and the effect is much worse if you ever leave your bed unmade.
