Mattresses are notoriously difficult to clean. You can’t put them in the washing machine and you can’t take them down to the Laundromat. You can spray them with scent remover, but those do not actually remove the dirt, grime, etc. from the mattress. Instead of worrying about how to clean your mattress, the best plan of action is to purchase a waterproof mattress protector.

These are not only for young kids who are still wetting the bed, but for anyone—especially if you are prone to eating or drinking in bed. They protect the mattress from liquid of all kinds, as well as bacteria and dirt. So, how to you pick out the right one?

Size

The very first thing to look for when buying a mattress protector is one that will fit your mattress. You want to know not only the size of your mattress, but the exact dimension, so that you can be sure to pick a protector that fits properly. The last thing you want is a protector that is constantly slipping off of your mattress because it is too large or not large enough.

Types of Protectors

There are many different kinds of waterproof mattress protectors. The first looks like a fitted sheet, and goes over the mattress, underneath your fitted sheet. This makes it easy to remove the protector and wash it as needed.

There are, however, also protectors that can be slid over the entire mattress and zipped into place, so even the bottom of the mattress is protected. This offers more protection, but is also substantially more difficult to clean, if needed.

Materials Used in Production

You want to look for high quality materials when it comes to the production of your waterproof mattress protector. Low-quality materials will leave you with a protector that squeaks or squishes when you shift on the mattress. While they may work well for a while, they are not the best option. Instead, look for protectors made of synthetic material, not rubberized plastic.

Extra Features

Many features come with extra features like allergy control or protection against beg bugs. These are great additional features to add to your mattress, which is likely to collect both allergens and dust mites over time. You can even find a protector that adds extra cushioning to your bed!
